BASIC REFRAME lesson 7
FRAMES of Reference used to capture the pattern of an issue
CHANGE or NO CHANGE - Handling surprises and frustrations in terms of Change
CHANGE FRAME: How we expect change or no change.
This is about what we are expecting or wanting compared to what actually happens in terms of CHANGE.
==============================================
Wanting things to stay the SAME is about not wanting any change, wanting what usually happens, or the Status Quo.
Wanting things DIFFERENT is about wanting change, wanting the unusual, wanting things new.
==============================================
The choices allow for things that have already happened or things that are yet to happen to line up with your choice in the Giving and Getting. If you feel stuck on how to use this form, ask the counsellor for advice.
You ask: Do you (or did you) want the outcome of giving or receiving to remain the SAME- unchanged or to become DIFFERENT- changed
You assess the nature of what you expect in terms of CHANGE What do I expect or want?
• I am not sure what I wanted
• Me expecting things to stay the SAME or returning to how they WERE (past)
• Me expecting things to become DIFFERENT from what they are or were (past)
• Me being unsure of what I actually expect.
You assess the nature of your experience in terms of CHANGE What actually happens?
• things staying the SAME (PAST) or returning to how they were
• things becoming DIFFERENT (PAST)
• Me being not really sure what my outcome is.
Out of our Change frame expectation of change or no change tends to rule what we see to receive or give, and how valuable we rate it. Change in REFRAME can be visually displayed using a Change Quadrant.

Practical ASSIGNMENT
I want you to FRAME an issue that has been upsetting for you, in fact have a look at a number of issues and see if you can map them to the frames. Becoming familiar with this KEY REFRAME activity is like learning shorthand compared to writing longhand in terms of spotting how to solve upsets.
BRIEF BACKGROUND DESCRIPTION
First give a brief description of the issue, in IMPACT format if you can (the WHEN, I FEEL, I RESPOND, BECAUSE...)
[textarea,brief background,4,70]
THE ROLE FRAME
UPSETS are usually set in what we want to receive or give, or NOT receive or NOT give and whether or not our expectations are met. To help name this we talk about being a consumer or a supplier.
In relation to the issue you are seeking to resolve CHOOSE which statement describes your involvement in terms of TIME and ROLE here
[list,my TIME and ROLE context is]
[option,PAST CONSUMER I got something I did not want 00,I GOT SOMETHING I DIDN’T WANT]
[option,PAST CONSUMER I did not get something I wanted 00,I DIDN’T GET SOMETHING I WANTED]
[option,PAST SUPPLIER I could not give what I wanted to give 01,I COULDN’T GIVE SOMETHING I WANTED TO GIVE]
[option,PAST SUPPLIER I gave what I did not want to give 01,I GAVE SOMETHING I DIDN’T WANT TO GIVE]
[option,FUTURE CONSUMER I will get what I do not want 10,I WILL GET SOMETHING I DON’T WANT TO GET]
[option,FUTURE CONSUMER I will not get what I want 10,I WON’T GET SOMETHING I WANT TO GET]
[option,FUTURE SUPPLIER I will not be able to give what I want to give 11,I WON’T BE ABLE TO GIVE SOMETHING I WANT TO GIVE]
[option,FUTURE SUPPLIER I will give something I do not want to give 11,I WILL GIVE SOMETHING I DON’T WANT TO GIVE]

THE CHANGE FRAME
what we do in our roles of giving and receiving in terms of what we want and do not want are flavoured by the importance and urgency, but they are also chosen in terms of whether or not we want something DIFFERENT from normal or usual, or whether or not we want things to stay the SAME or return to what they used to be. This is all about how we handle things changing and not changing.
THINK about what you've entered so far and sum it up with your choice in this next selection.
e.g. If you wanted CHANGE (something new, unusual, different, spontaneous or surprising) but got NO CHANGE (something familiar, old, usual, predictable or status quo.)
SELECT which is true for you in regard to the issue you are journalling with REFRAME
WHAT did you expect in terms of CHANGE?

Please explain or describe your view on how you think you could use these three interactive frames of reference to solve an upset by surfacing the repeating patterns.
