REFRAMING EXPLAINED
REFRAMING is a way of re-structuring how you are thinking about an issue so that you can work your way through it rather than park it, avoid it or get thoroughly upset about it. It involves some key activities and some key factors.
The Key Cognitive factors
1. FALLIBLE Human beings are innately fallible and hold many irrational concepts in their beliefs systems for various reasons including socialisation and nurture by significant others and culture.
2. EXAGGERATIONS We can tend to exaggerate the badness of events and with such distortion surface strong negative emotions that are inappropriate and irrational.
3. FRUSTRATION and DISCOMFORT We can tend to have a low discomfort tolerance for things physical and emotional and to under-rate our ability to cope of handle things. This is a key factor in addictive tendencies.
4. NEGATIVE LABELS We can tend to condemn self and others through inaccurate evaluations of such and from insufficient information to establish such.
5. RIGID DEMANDS ON REALITY We can hold so strongly onto a rule or belief or expectation that we become inflexible and demand that reality comply. Reality can refer to others delivering without fail; self delivering or performing without failure; life giving you what you want and when you want it. Various demandingness about life issues.
From looking at these factors one can see that Reframing requires cognitive tools for spotting and altering irrational concepts and beliefs.
THE KEY ACTIVITIES to using the REFRAME process
Self-survey
The key to be able to REFRAME an issue in your life is first getting an idea of how it sits.
So you first you do a self-survey to give some reflection and feedback to yourself about five areas in which an upsetting problem or presenting issue sits with: emotion, behaviour, environment, physical reactions etc. are listed. From that list, you are encouraged to pick out up to seven of the most upsetting things.
Prioritise
Unique to the REFRAME process is the use of a PRIORITISE tool to help you focus through a natural process, those aspects which are the HOT issues.
Impact
Each of your HOT issues are written about using the IMPACT tool format to define each of them and to form some initial general goals. You then pick which of those you want to work on first.
Analysis
You take the one HOT issue you’ve selected and bring it to the ANALYSIS tool. You frame it up using three interactive frames of reference. You verify or dispute the frames of reference to establish whether or not you’re holding the issue rationally-realistically.
Response
You now arrive at the planning process where you put together an action RESPONSE plan based on your general goals, the impact, and the analysis.
Monitoring Progress
Putting the plan into action requires monitoring one’s progress hence a monitoring journal where you are accountable to your plan.
Relapse Plan
This is a bit of insurance on your part to maintain the gains you'll have secured by doing your REFRAME cognitive work. The idea is you put some things in place that you will use should you feel that it is reappearing in your life. Remember you can always step through things again using this REFRAME step process.
Review and Adjusting
As your plan impacts, and depending on its effectiveness, you may find that you need to revise your list of problem issues. Working on the HOT issue can resolve a number of the lesser priority issues. Do all this in cooperation with your Counsellor who is there to equip you to develop your personal interventions for a better outcome and wellness. Blocks can be worked as a separate issue to REFRAME.
