Feelings and Behaviour
As you learned, point C stands for feelings and behaviours (and sometimes other thoughts) that result from the way we think about point A.
Feelings or emotions
You react emotionally to your experiences, real and imagined. People often dont know what they are feeling and have a hard time giving their feelings a name. No feeling is illegitimate, but some are more appropriate or self-helping that is, they help you better achieve your Goals (G). Here are some common feeling-words. Read these words so that you can improve your feeling vocabulary.
Mad peaceful anxious appreciative Down worried frightened infuriated Guilty empty disgusted dismal Hateful lonely resentful cheerful Hurt unity malicious afraid Sad insecure humiliated accepting Calm furious serene horrified Timid irate scared shocked Loving depressed ambitious pleased Shaky horrified dejected repulsed Jealous satisfied ashamed enjoy Happy whole excited apprehensive Lost forsaken glad uncomfortable
You can experience a variety of emotions, and you can learn to direct and guide your emotional experience so that you eliminate most of your unnecessary suffering. The first step is identifying and admitting what you are feeling.
Behaving
Just as feeling is one way you respond to your situation, behaving is another way. Behaviour describes what you are doing or how you are acting.
Look at the following words that describe behaviour. The list may help you to find some words that describe your actions and help you to increase your vocabulary about behaviour.
Avoiding hitting arguing talking Withdrawing yelling sulking crying Screaming aggressive sleeping eating Drinking driving complaining.
REBT holds strongly that you can learn to change your self-defeating, addictive, or other undesirable behaviours by changing the way you talk to yourself or think. You can learn new behaviour. But REBT also holds strongly that you can always accept yourself, no matter how poor your behaviour may be. You always have the philosophical choice of accepting or not accepting yourself yes, under all conditions no matter how you behave. No, not always accepting what you do. Yes, always accepting you, the doer.
