REBT Module 3 Lesson 5

This series of lessons is designed to connect self-helpers with the basics of REBT theory as part of a complete series studying the philosophy, theory and practice. This is the theory section.

[form] "REBT Theory Lesson 05" Your Name please: [text,r_name,30] Email: [text,r_email,30] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Common Irrational Beliefs REBT helps you look for other common irrational Beliefs. All of these Beliefs are aspects of (or subheadings under) the three major musts. For example: 1. I must be loved and approved of by every significant person in my life, and if I’m not, it’s awful. (Major Must No. 1 and Must No. 3). 2. When other people behave badly or unfairly, as they must not, they should be damned and severely punished. They are bad or rotten individuals. (Major Must No. 2). 3. It’s awful when things are not the way I’d like them to be. I can’t stand it! Things absolutely should be better! (Major Must No. 3). 4. I have to be very anxious about events that are uncertain or potentially dangerous. I need guaranteed certainty and safety! (Major Must No. 3). 5. I am worthless unless I am thoroughly competent, adequate, and achieving at all times, or at least most of the time in at least one major area. (Major Must No. 1). 6. There has got to be a perfect solution to this problem. I must be certain and have perfect control over things. (Major Must No. 3). 7. The world should be fair and just. I can’t bear it when people are unfair! (Major Must No. 2 and No. 3). 8. I should be comfortable and without pain at all times. (Major Must No. 3). 9. I may be going crazy and that would be unbearable. I’d be an inadequate person if I were severely disturbed, as I must not be! (Major Must No. 1 and No. 3). 10. It’s easier to avoid than to face life’s difficulties. I must not have to work hard to overcome my problems. (Major Must No. 3). 11. I need someone stronger than myself on whom to depend or rely. I can’t take care of myself, as I should be able to do. (Major Must No. 1 and No. 3). 12. Emotional misery comes from external pressure, and I have little ability to control or change my feelings. I must be upset about bad events and can’t manage bad things. (Major Must No. 1 and No. 3). 13. My past is the cause of my present problems. Because these events were strong influences on me, they will continue to be so. I must keep reacting badly to them. (Major Must No. 1 and No. 3). REBT calls these Beliefs or self-statements irrational Beliefs (iBs). They are only “true” because we define them as “true” however the facts of life largely contradict them. Telling yourself that these things are true and acting as if they are true leads you to create needless emotional misery. ============================================================= Assignment 05 Do you identify with any of these?
