The ABC Model part 2
Expanding the ABC Model
Point D
This stands for disputation – you argue against your self-defeating beliefs and for a more self-helping way to think or talk to yourself. You debate your irrational beliefs (iBs) until you change them and create a set of rational beliefs (rBs) in their place.
At point D, Jack can Dispute by asking himself, “Why must sales people treat me politely? Even if they act rudely, how does that make them total idiots? Where is it written that I have to tell that salesperson a thing or two? How does it make me a rotten person is I don’t?”
Point E
This stands for an Effective new philosophy that results from rational Disputing. Jack’s E’s could be: “That salesperson didn’t make me mad – I made myself mad. I didn’t have to get made. Not everyone would have reacted the same way I did. Some people would not have let it bother them. I accept responsibility that I let it bother me. The salesperson did act out of line and was rude to me. But he should act that way right now, because that is his way of behaving. It may be idiotic behaviour, but that never makes him a total idiot. I can handle his rudeness or do something about it, like complain to the supervisor. Still, I’m disappointed to say what is on my mind in situations like this. I will learn to act differently, but for now I can accept myself even though I’m not perfect. Then I’ll practice being more assertive.”
Jack’s new outlook (E) makes him feel sorry and disappointed (appropriate negative feelings at point C) about being treated rudely – but not grouchy and hateful (inappropriate negative feelings at C). He is still stating clearly that he doesn’t like to be treated rudely and prefers to be treated with dignity, but he has stopped demanding that he must be treated properly.
Jack’s old philosophy, and not the salesperson’s rudeness, mainly caused him to be grouchy, enraged, and damning. His Effective new philosophy (E) does not make him feel inappropriately upset. He still feels badly but surrenders his inappropriate feelings or rage and self-downing. He is accepting the way things are, stating his preferences, and not demanding that he and the world must become as he wishes it to be. His new philosophy is more effective.
This is the ABCDE-G model at work: People like Jack – and you – use it to see that they think about Activating Events, and thereby largely create their feelings and behaviours. By changing their self-talk and musturbatory philosophy, they can begin to change their inappropriate, self-defeating emotions and actions (C), by Disputing (D) their irrational Beliefs (iBs) and arriving at an Effective new Philosophy (E).
By magic? No! By mere understanding and insight? Partly. By understanding and insight plus the work and practice of Disputing? Yes!
REBT particularly helps you Dispute and change your self-sabotaging and socially handicapping irrational beliefs (iBs). This is hardly the only road to change, but this is the main one we will focus on.
