REFRAME Level 3
Lesson 09
The REFRAME counselling session
Let me emphasise that your familiarity and skill in helping others is relative to how much you are currently and actively working on your own issues. The Online Counsellor website has been set up to faciliate the help and counselling of others. The goal is to work online with people so all the resources etc. are available online as windows you can have open on the side of the chat window.
At this point you have completed the introduction and the first seven lessons. Hopefully you have also made active use of the online journal on issues both positive and negative so that you are familiar with the idea of forming a MAP or pattern of how you hold an issue in your thinking. The journal process is also such that you can pick a bible character in a situation and journal it as if you were him or her to gain further insight. Just below is a link specially designed to work with clients.

PLEASE CLICK ON IT NOW AND OPEN IT UP. KEEP IT OPEN AND SWITCH BACK AND FORWARD FROM IT USING YOUR TASKBAR.
There are two pages. The first has all the explanation on it and there is a link to a brief version once you get familiar. Also linked off the REFRAME page is a link that will open up a separate page for goal work. If a client is finding it hard figuring out the REFRAME process, you are better to discuss what they are aiming at in terms of goals as this will give the REFRAME process a definite contextual outcome.
THE REDIRECTED REFRAME COUNSELLOR PAGE
This will have sets of questions for each FRAME of the MAP of how the client is holding it in their thinking. (OR you if you're using it for a personal issue). The client only needs to alter ONE of those frames for things to start happening for them. The main tool of the REFRAME counsellor are his or her questions which INVITE the client to consider alteration or adjustment. There are three areas to do that in: TIME and ROLE; TRANSITION; or FOCUS.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASKING THE STRUCTURE QUESTIONS: or WHERE AM I BEST TO BEGIN?
Primarily REFRAME is about asking the STRUCTURE or CONTEXT questions to zero in quickly. Ask yourself what you have already picked up through chatting and building rapport (trust, friendship, feeling understood) and make selections in the 3 menus from it. Then ask questions to ascertain the balance of selections until you feel you've mapped it how they are holding it in their thinking. Click on SUBMIT and this will redirect you to the relevant page for working that pattern.
WHAT DO I DO ONCE THE ISSUE IS MAPPED?
What you are best to do then is to work helping the client define their goals relative to the issue. There are three sets of ways of doing that on the goal link.

Keeping NOTES
Logging with your software is a very good notekeeper, however you may wish to have a notebook or pad to write comments, notes or questions on. Let the client's brain take the strain. The personal issue is THEIRS not YOURS. It is theirs to solve and yours to facilitate that by helping them zero in on what they need to do to intervene and make a difference they can live with, and those around them if possible.
ASKING the CONTENT Questions
REMEMBER the time context in terms of PAST or FUTURE and frame your questions accordingly. Also spot the ROLE and keep your questions anchored in the ROLE they are upset in. You don't have to use ALL the questions as they will feel interogated. These are here to assist you to get them started. Once they are started you may find they naturally fill in answers to one or more of these.
1. ASK questions about WHERE and WHEN this took or is going to take place.
2. ASK questions about WHAT has happened or is going to happen.
3. ASK them to Explain HOW it took place or is going to take place
4. ASK them questions about "WHY did this happen?" or "WHY is this happening" or "WHY is this going to happen?"
5. ASK them questions about WHO the main players are, the people or groups.
6. Lastly ASK questions about HOW this fits into the larger picture of things? WHO ultimately this is all for? or WHAT this is ultimately for?
ASSIGNMENT
You are expected to engage either Foundone or Barneybus in an issue as a role play preparation for working with someone. You will need to arrange a suitable time and rendevous in the Personal Help Chatroom to do this. They will have a personal issue that you will work with them on and keep the log of.
REMEMBER That your chat must be logged for two reasons.
1. So that you can share it with the counsellor who is supervising your learning
2. So that you email a copy of it directly to the person you are helping if they have no logging facility.
