Learning How to help others to set Goals
REFRAME GOAL WORK
You invite the other person to share the TARGET of their Goal work
1. Ask, "WHO is this goal for?"
This goal is about… (circle which one)
1. Me and what I need to change - not change - or continue
2. Others what others need to change - not change - continue
3. LIFE and what needs to change - not change - or continue
2. Ask, "WILL your goals involve things within your control to change or resist change?"
Setting goals that are under your control means that you have a good chance of reaching them. In the work example, you can probably find out what expectations your supervisor has for the department manager and you can probably meet them. Hopefully, you will feel a sense of satisfaction as you improve your job performance. However, a manager position may not become available or a relative of the company's owner may be appointed to the position despite your best efforts.

Goal work involves two basic roles: Consumer and Supplier.
The Consumer is the receiving role. A consumer actions things by ASKING. They are like the Passenger in a bus.
1. What do you want to receive?
2. What are you prepared to receive?
3. What do you not want to receive?
4. Are you prepared to handle not receiving what you want?
The Supplier role is the giving role. A supplier actions things by GIVING directing or controlling. They are like the Driver in a bus.
1. What do you want to give?
2. What are you prepared to give?
3. What do you not want to give?
4. Are you prepared to handle not being able to give what you want to give?

MORE - LESS - CONTINUE developed into START - STOP - KEEP
This approach to goal work is developed from Revelations 2 and 3 in terms of the pattern or structure of how Jesus spoke to each of the Seven Churches of Asia

YOU can start with any of the 3 parts. Which one you start with depends on the issue you intend to set goals for. ALL THREE parts need to be expressed with any one goal to be balanced. check out Ephesians 4:28 to see what I mean.

ASK, "What do you want LESS of?"
ASK, "What are you prepared to STOP doing to get less?"
Stopping something happening can be a response to a poor strategy you’ve been following; a poor, unhelpful, unhealthy practice or habit. The first step towards a better outcome is to cease following what is causing your upset in the first place. Here's what I need to stop.
Get them to share some specific things they are better to STOP
Encourage them to describe them in specific behaviour type language, realistic things they will stop doing
ASK, "What are some observable clues that will show you (or others watching) you are making progress on this goal?"
Get them to describe them as things others could hear or see in or of them.

ASK, "What to you want to have CONTINUE?"
ASK, "What are you prepared to KEEP doing or have happening?"
Don’t toss everything out! You will need some resources or strategies that have worked in the past, you will have things of value that do not need to stop and that will be valuable for you to begin altering things to your better outcome.
ASK What do you need to keep doing until done?
Get them to share some specific things to KEEP happening
Encourage them to describe them specific behaviour type language - realistic things you will Keep doing.
ASK What are some observable clues that will show you (or others watching) you are making progress on this goal.
Get them to describe them as things others could hear or see in or of them

Now that you’ve stopped and assessed your existing resources including a network of supporters, you might think about what you will need to begin or start happening what you will need to bring your strategy to bear. What do you really want to start happening that’s not happening for you now?
ASK, "What do you need to start doing?"
Get them to share some specific things to START doing?
Encourage them to describe them as specific - realistic things they will start doing
ASK, "What are some of the observable clues that will show you (or others watching) you are making progress on this goal?"
