REFRAME Level 3 01

This is your first lesson in the REFRAME Level 3 series. The first two lessons cover an overview and the basic benefits of the process.

[form] Name[text,r_name,30] Email [text,r_email,30] REFRAME Level 3 INTRODUCTION Lesson 1 An approach to counselling yourself and others by examining what you expected from a situation (past), or what you are expecting (future), compared to what actually happened, or what will actually happen. By asking two simple questions: Past situations: Something that has already happened 1. What did I expect? 2. What happened? OR Future situations: something that is yet to happen 1. What am I expecting? 2. What will actually happen? IF we identify which of our expectations are not met, then we can locate the areas of our upset to work on. WE zero in on the issue using simple contrasts, until we come to the contrast that is approximate or close to our reason for being upset. THEN we work out a strategy using that information to help us change what we are expecting, OR change what actually happens to resolve our upset. REFRAME holds that our expectations are manifested in two key roles in life: Consumer and Supplier. and that what we accept as evidence, and what we view with value or disdain for this view will flavour how we view things when our expectations are met or not met. You will be presented a series of lessons that will explain each part in much more detail. You don’t have to know that detail, but as you start to experience using REFRAME you will likely want to know so you can help yourself more and even better learn how to help others. Here is an overview of the lessons: 1. The First issue will teach you the thoughts behind REFRAME’s approach and some things about being upset. It explains what sort of upsets there are, and gives a birds eye view of what it’s all about. 2. The Second issue explains how our beliefs either work FOR us or against us. Beliefs are about how we expect things; assume things, or believe things as our map of reality. 3. The Third Issue explains the first context used to help us identify what our upsetting issue is. It is the context of ROLE; the roles of consumer and supplier. A person who receives things, and a person who gives things. 4. The succeeding issues examine what each of the 7 EXPECTATION issues are. Each expecting issue is set against the background of two contrasts. First the contrast of being either a consumer or a supplier, then the contrast about whether your upset occurred in the Past or will happen in the Future. 5. From about Issue Seven you will be given a journal link accessed in your Personal Start page assigned when you register as a client on the Website. You will also be issued a workbook of your own. With the Journal link… An expectation is explored using by asking whether you expected the unusual (new, different, spontaneous) outcome or whether you expected an usual (old, normal, predictable) outcome. This is where the word FRAME comes in. The idea is to FRAME the structure of how a person (you or others) are holding the issue in your mind. You are also asked whether you got what you expected, or not in terms of reality. After you journal an issue you will have drawn a map of the structure of your upset or relationship experience. 6. Issues 8 through to 10 are when you come to learning how to challenge and restructure your FRAMES of thinking hence the phrase: RE-FRAME Strategy sessions explore 3 simple questions and the outcome of your answers in forming a plan to resolve the issue being explored. 1. Are you better to change your expectation to solve your Upset because your thinking is irrational/unrealistic? 2. Are you better to change your reality (your outcome) because what you expect is realistic/rational? 3. Are you better to withdraw or strategically retreat? After choosing which is the better way you are helped to work that strategy into a plan. WHAT’s unique to REFRAME is being able to test your final strategy before you even try it out using the analyser. IF your strategy stands the TRY-OUT test, you can go and work it out with confidence. The IDEA is to work on changing what you CAN change not demanding the impossible Life is all about constant change and facing the reality of things that we will likely never be able to change, contrasted by things that we CAN actually change. We may not be able to change something how we would like, but we can change what we THINK about that issue. The Alcoholics Anonymous Change Prayer says this: LORD Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change The courage to change the things I can And the wisdom to know the difference. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASSIGNMENT: Please outline briefly your motivation for learning these skills and where you hope to apply it in your life and in helping others.
