FH Loneliness

Something to ask; Something to do; Someone to love

Loneliness

  • Loneliness is being apart from persons, for some people it is being apart from God.
  • Most lonely people feel apart from love.

Loneliness is no respecter of people. It affects young people who leave home. It touches elderly people who retire or lose a partner. It affects marrieds who discover their partner no longer loves them, and those with high ideals who are snubbed.

Something to ask

  • Ask yourself, "Is this loneliness my fault?"

  • Write down reasons why you are lonely. Look at the list and then ask, "What things can I change? Where can I start building relationships?"

Something to do

  • Pocket your pride and ask forgiveness if you have hurt a person.
  • Face the fears that stop you rebuilding relationships.
  • Talk to a neighbour … today
  • Invite someone to your home … today
  • Plan to visit your family, prepare … now

Something to do

  • Realise that you are of value to other people and God.
  • Start saying how you feel.
  • Start voicing your opinions.
  • Seek a goal in life and start aiming for it.
  • Look for a group, a club or a church that has your aims and ideas.

Think about the principle contained in John F. Kennedy’s statement: "Ask, not what America can do for me, but what I can do for America".

Someone to love

  • If loneliness is about loving, then find some person to love.
  • Loving is not getting something from another, but giving to another.
  • When we reach out to others, they reach out to us.
  • Loving is seeking the highest good of another. Start working out this kind of love.

"The true magic in life is growth. There are no instantaneous creation of the new. Even the most inspired vision needs time to grow, and if this law is not obeyed only violence and disaster follow"

Laurens van der Post

"Spiritual growth often arises out of a struggle with doubt, sin, weakness and personal failure. This growth does not come by avoiding issues. It proceeds by facing them, grappling with them and, if need be, accepting the pain involved. Resurrection comes by the way of the cross, not by evading it".

Phillip Clement-Jewery
